Things To Consider When Buying A Canoe by Marty Genereux of CentennialCanoe.com

As a canoeing outfitter, I receive calls from people wanting to buy canoes and sometimes they leap before looking. Here are a few things to consider when buying a canoe.

Cargo Space:
Are you planning to do overnight trips or day-trips? If your desire is to take a day trip with a picnic basket you'll do fine with a 14-foot canoe. However, if multi-day trips are your goal, you'll want gear space for stoves, coolers, tents, etc. Now you're looking at 16- or 17-foot canoes, which cost more.

Canoe Weight:
How much weight are you willing to carry? Are you in good shape to toss your 75-pound canoe on top of your car?

Storage:
Where will you store your canoe? Does your garage have space?

Accessories = $$:
Now it's time to accessorize with paddles, life jackets and a roof-rack. These three items alone can cost more than the canoe. For overnight trips you'll need safety gear, tent, sleeping bags, stove, portable toilet, dry bags, maps, rain gear, rain tarp, coolers, food etc. If these realities of canoeing don't seem attractive you might consider renting or calling a professional outfitter.
