Camping Gear - Homemade Cook Kit
This cook kit has been used for as many as 6
people. It was the cook kit of choice on all of the
group trips I went on. I assembled most of it by scrounging
around thrift stores. You may even find that such a kit
is superior to other store bought kits due to its
functionality and versatility.
Here are the basic components:
- A large bucket and cover for holding all
components
- An old metal coffee pot
- Metal pie plates
- Pot grabber (shown below)
- Two pots that nest inside each other with
handles removed
- Covers for the two pots (I got lucky and
found these in a thrift store)
- Two old plastic coffee cups that nest
inside each other
- An "insulated" plastic glass taken apart
to make 2 cups
- Ordinary old silverware (see inside
coffee pot)
- A can opener
- A plastic spatula - I had to cut a little
of mine off to make it fit
- A bag with soap and scrubber
- Fry pan (stored separate of kit)

Here's the trick: Simply get all this
stuff to fit inside that big metal bucket. Mix or match,
shop the thrift stores, your Mom's attic, or where ever you
have to in order to find the components. As I remember,
the kit shown on this page only cost me about $10 total! I was
lucky however to find the pot lids and pot grabber at thrift
stores - you may have to buy these items at a sporting shop.
I bought the large bucket and cover at a sporting shop.

Ready to go!
Here's what works great as a fry pan: an old
teflon™ pan with the handle removed. It heats up much faster
than a cast iron pan and is much lighter. To make the
pan function well, you heat it up good with oil in the bottom
and rub the oil in good with paper towel. Keep the pan
oiled - don't wash it during your trip but wipe it out instead
and you will have a no-stick camping pan. Store the pan in a
plastic bag and store away with the food at night so as to not
attract animals. The pan I use is shown below.
