Fish Story #1 - The First of Many
Fish Stories!
This is one of my all-time
favorite childhood fish stories. I was about 14 years old. My
Dad, myself, and a guy named Julius (visiting from the big
city of Chicago) went fishing for perch, walleye, northern
pike, or whatever we could catch. Julius and I were casting
plugs for Northerns. I think Julius had a lot to do with
getting me hooked on northern pike fishing because my Dad
really didn't care for them much. My Dad fished for perch with
his very long telescoping cane pole, which even by today's
standards is a killer panfish pole if you know how to use it -
and my Dad did! My Dad had a small minnow on for bait and
suddenly he had a "nice one", possibly a big walleye. The fish
would not turn, my Dad had the pole in the water to give as
much line as possible but it was no use - the 8# line snapped
taking the bait and line bobber in all! Julius says "Big Pike"
and my father concurs - "That was a big one!" Suddenly, we spy
the bobber in the distance, and it is moving! The pike is
still on the line! I oar us over while my Dad rigs up a #3
Mepps spinner (I remember this like yesterday!). After playing
tag with the fish, my Dad gets a chance to wrap his spinner
around the line a few times below the bobber and the fight is
on! This is a big fish but we are not totally certain it is a
pike (it could be a carp) until it jumps out of the water,
carrying all the line, bobber, and extra lure with him. It is
a huge pike! After a run or two, we get the pike close to the
boat. Just as my Dad is telling Julius not to grab the line,
he grabs the line! Julius lets go, but the fish is so spooked,
it makes a hard lunge, BREAKING my Dad's rod! So now he has a
broken rod, a broken line with bobber and a tag-on lure
wrapped around, and THE FISH IS STILL ON! After a few more
runs, this fish is tired out, really tired out. We net the 15#
fish and Julius lets out his famous laugh and rambles, with
cigar in mouth, "HA AH HA AH HA AH Zik-mont, HA AH HA AH AH HA
Zik-mont" (My Dad's name is Zygmunt, a common Polish name). We
stuffed that pike and baked it with bacon strips over it and
had a Big Pike Party for about 10 of us at Julius's cabin. My
Dad wasn't too happy about the rod.
