Fish Story #3 - A Kid
Goes Musky Fishing - Part I
When I was about 13 years
old, my Dad took me fishing for muskies "up north" at Willow
Flowage in northern Wisconsin. There was a lot of
planning (and spending) on my Dad's part. We had no
"musky rods" nor did we have any other "musky lures". I
remember going to the sport shop. Dad got these short
stout broomstick-like musky rods made by Heddon. My rod
had a Zebco 808 reel and my Dad had a fancy Pflueger
baitcasting reel. Also, we picked up some lures: some
large spinners and some topwater lures called mudpuppies.
Also, we were going to bait fish with large sucker minnows.
We got to the lake at midmorning after a 2+hour drive. Man,
was I excited! We first tried walleye fishing with Rapalas.
On our first two casts we got two walleyes! Oddly
enough, I don't believe we caught any more walleyes that day.
My Dad placed a large sucker minnow on for muskies with no
luck. I cast the big musky lures. And I cast and
cast some more! No musky. After getting a bit weary (of the
lack of action) I started to cast tiny #2 spinners and an
assortment of other smaller lures for bass and perch. My
Dad was getting very annoyed - he spent all this money on
musky gear and I was dinking around catching 5" perch and
bass. I was catching small fish right and left and as I
was reeling in perhaps my tenth fish, this monstrous musky
grabs the small perch as I prepare to lift it out of the
water! I am just terrified! Instead of setting the
hook as I maybe should have done, I press the release and give
slack line - the big fish drops the perch. The fish was
easily 40 inches . . . no, 50 inches! This was
definitely a "fish story day" since later the same day another
crazy musky-related incident would take place. Read
