Fish Story #4 - A Kid
Goes Musky Fishing - Part II
For the background on this
story, you should read
Fish Story #3. This
story is a continuation of that story. After the "big
event" of Fish Story #3, I was all revved up to catch a musky.
I put on a huge topwater bait called a
mudpuppy and started casting.
I cast and cast throughout the day. From what I learned
later, the mud puppy is best used near dark, but we didn't
have the internet back then to learn such things - heck we
barely had tv's and phones! So after about 6 hours of
near non-stop casting with the broom-stick pole, I was getting
a bit weary, although for a 13 yr-old kid I was holding up
pretty well. It was in the neighborhood of 5:30PM when I slung
that topwater lure out for the 16th thousandth time. By
this time I was conditioned to the idea that no fish would
strike. Then, it happened. I am reeling in and
this huge musky grabs my lure as it jumps completely out of
the water! This was at least a 40 incher! I didn't know
what to do so I did . . . nothing. With my jaw dragging
along the bottom of the boat I watched as the big monstrous
musky flung the lure out of his mouth. Set the hook you
say? Maybe next time!
