Fish Story #5 - Crazy
SmallMouth Bass!
It was 1992 and I was
camping with 3 buddies (as shown in the pic below) at XXXXXXXX
Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. I suppose I
would tell you the name of this lake if you tortured me ...
maybe! We set out in cold weather at the end of May - the
water was cold and the fish were a bit sluggish. We
caught enough for our dinners however, just barely. We
were on a smallmouth lake, but the smallmouths did not seem
anywhere to be found, even though it was time for them to be
in their spawning areas. I theorized that the water was too
cold. At about the 3rd day, we were all driven into our
tent by a fierce rain storm. This was not ordinary rain
however, it was warm rain! The shallow water near shore
was actually warmer after the rain then before. I told
my friend Shawn, "let's go - the water has warmed up!".
We headed down to a shallow bay in our canoe, one where we had
a little action on previous days. There was splashing on
the surface, then more splashing. I tell Shawn, "Put on
a floating Rapala and twitch it on the surface!" Within
minutes, we both have fish on! At one point, Shawn had
the lure pop out of a fish's mouth, fly over his head to the
other side of the canoe, and another bass grabbed it! THE BASS
WERE GOING NUTS! When we got back to camp, the other
more land-loving campers were certainly surprised! We
had plenty of fish to eat for the rest of this trip.
