Fish Story #6 - A Good
Fishing Hole is Worth Dodging Bullets!
Shortly before I was to be
married, my future wife's friend took Renee and I up to her
family cabin on a river that I must leave unnamed. Being
raised on river fishing, I was a "river rat" at heart so I was
pretty excited about checking out the fishing. Sure
enough, this was an absolute paradise! In fact I even
landed a 3+ pound smallmouth on this day! Well, I just
had to take my fishing buddy up there to check this out!
I got some county maps out and found a place we could camp at
on the river. As we usually did, we went UP the river
quite a ways. (So we could fish our way back down). It was low
water so we had to get out and walk the canoe through some
spots. The fishing was fair to good. We were
getting some action. We kept going up, up, up the river.
Finally, we found the "hole of holes". For this small
stream, this was a deep hole that was just gigantic....and
FULL of fish! There were really nice rapids and deep holes
right below. As you can see in the picture below, I was
sitting on a rock and fishing - this was a fisherman's dream
but for.... the farmer that lived nearby! On at least two
different occasions on different trips, during broad daylight,
we heard the distinctive sound of a high caliber deer rifle
with a BOOM . . . BOOM . . . BOOM. Three shots. We never
saw a person at that farm. For that fact, we rarely saw
a person outside in that entire area of the state. Well,
since the bullets did not seem to be flying in our direction,
we were not deterred. Would you leave the best fishing
hole you ever found because of a little shooting?
