Fish Story #8 - The
Subzero Pike Bonanza!
In January of 2005, we were
experiencing a very cold winter. I had a week off from
work just after Christmas and wanted to get out ice fishing
real bad. It was just plain blustery each day.
Finally, there appeared to be a day that would work. It
was to get up to 15 degrees above zero and there was to be
virtually no wind. So, my 9-yr old fish-crazy son David
and I planned on getting out. I prepared and packed
everything in advance the day before so we could get out extra
early. We left the house around 6AM and it was pitch
dark and the temp was around -10 Deg F. By the time we got to
the lake, it was just getting light and it was actually colder
than when we left home; it was -15 Deg F or colder! Wow,
was that chilly setting up the tipups. Fortunately we
could drive out on the ice so I kept the car running with the
heat on. I would set a tip-up, warm up, and set another
and so on. After setting all the tipups, I then started
setting up the portable ice shack when I heard a little
commotion. I stepped out and there was David, with one
of the biggest pike we would catch that day. As predicted, it
was not windy at all so it was actually not too bad out there
even though the temp only got up to 10 or 12 degrees. We
had almost the whole lake to ourselves and ended up with 7
nice pike, 1 crappie, and 15 bluegills.
