Fish Story #9 - Paul's
Big Fish, Sak's Bigger Fish
Way back in the spring of
1982, my college roommate Paul and I (Paul referred to me as
SAK) drove down to the local river to cast for some pike one
evening. I believe it was the 1st of May (and pike season was
open year-round on this river) and it was an extremely warm
day. We were casting small Mepp's spinners, #2 I
believe. These were quite small for pike I know but we
wanted to catch anything we could, big or small. On one
of my first casts I snared a small pike. Then, a few
casts later, I had a small pike snip my line when the lure hit
the water. A little later, I believe I landed another
pike, this time a little bigger. Paul, on the other
hand, was getting a little fed up and decided to find his own
"hotspot". Paul trekked down the shore a bit and found a
nice casting spot. After about another hour or so with
no action where I was, I tracked down Paul. I asked him
"Any luck?" His reply, "Take a look at this!". It
was a nice pike, a little over 30 inches. Well, Paul was
letting me know in no uncertain terms who did the better
fishing that day! We were ready to head back as it was
getting dark, but we decided to make a couple more casts by
the car. After a cast or two I had one on. A BIG
one! After playing it quite a while, we beached it up
the sandy shore. It was 37" and around 15 pounds! I must
say it dwarfed Paul's fish. Well, Paul sure heard about
that fish. Since we were roommates, he heard about it a
lot! He still hears about that fateful trip to this day!
