Camping Sleeping Pads & Ultra Light Sleeping Pads

I have gone full circle on sleeping pads.  My first sleeping pad (see photo here) was a very thin, very hard, small pad that gave me great amounts of back pain and sleepless nights! I then, in my poor college days, obtained a large chunk of 3" upholstery foam from a kind lady at an upholstery shop.  You can see the foam in this picture.  It worked great!  I obtained a stuff sack for it and stored/portaged in under one of the canoe seats.  Well, the dog (and other things) took a liking to my great pad as well and my wife decided it's time was up. So, I bought a self inflating 2" pad as shown here that works well.  The pad I now have is similar to the ones shown below. My advice - get the most comfortable pad you can - there's no TV to watch at 3AM during a sleepless night in a tent.

The Therm-a-Rest Expedition is todays standard for the all-around self-inflating mattress. Providing an optimal combination of comfort, warmth, and weight, the Expedition mattress is best suited to those who split their time between comfortable car camping and week-long backpack trips.
